Make a venn diagram of bubblegumpop and Prokofiev and in the common center you will find only Kate NV. The work of the Russian multi-instrumentalist is as childish and sweet as it is dissonant and unpredictable – like a kind of Peter and the Wolf on acid. With tape decks, synths and a range of other equipment and instruments in front of her, it is still completely uncertain at every beginning where the journey will end: sometimes it is a small song, sometimes an enchanting, ten-minute improvisation. The latter turned out to be the case in the session Front recorded with Kate in the late summer of 2019.
Kate Shilonosova, her full name, has her roots in punk (she also plays in ГШ / Glintshake), studied for years at a music school in Moscow, but saw her musical horizons really broadened at the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo. She now travels around the world on her own – to play and to cycle, because that is where her other great passion lies. In any case, there were bicycle paths around the Vlieland Brewery, where Front filmed this session during Into The Great Wide Open. Both the brewery and the festival contributed to the creation.
You can read more about Kate NV's music and cycling adventures in the interview Loulou Kuster had with her for Front last year.
