For the third session in collaboration with Le Guess Who? our video team has settled at Kapitaal, an important meeting place and creative breeding ground in the Utrecht District C. In the first place, Kapitaal is there for the 'print freaks', to make posters and the like with screen printing, etching or riso. But among the plants and prints, Kapitaal also organizes lectures and live music. Front filmed oud player Nawras Altaky, accompanied by Ghaeth Almaghoot.
Nawras didn't take his oud with him when he fled Syria to the Netherlands a few years ago. During the war in his native country he had completely discovered and mastered the instrument; a chance meeting in the Netherlands encouraged him to pick up the thread again. Altaky, who lives in Utrecht, now devotes his music to the children in the Greek refugee camp Moria, among other things. For Front he played the song 'Autumn Nights', accompanied by Syrian clarinetist Ghaeth Almaghoot.
The session by Nawras Altaky & Ghaeth Almaghoot is part of Vunk On Vacation, an alternative travel program of the Le Guess Who? festival. Where in a normal year the festival visitor can be surprised by exciting acts in interesting places throughout Utrecht, this year the legendary Rotterdam DJ David Vunk takes them on a journey of discovery through the Dom city. In the third episode, which can be seen below, he participates in a dance lesson from Stichting 't Zonnetje and ends up in brown café Weerdzicht.
