The nonchalance with which the backing vocals come in just too late, the laconic, jerky and thrusting chorus, the lingering opening riff. Everything about 'Office Hell', one of the two songs Global Charming played on a sweltering summer evening in V11 for the Front video team, sounds effortlessly cool. But don't be misled, because the Amsterdam artpunk quartet has carefully calculated everything, including that coolness.
The name Global Charming had been in the air for a while - in November 2019 the band already played the Front curated part of het door Front gecureerde onderdeel van Le Mini Who? - but with the recently released debut Mediocre, Brutal the band has proven themselves as one of the most promising bands on the Subroutine Records roster. Moreover, a band full of perfectionists: frontman Jilles van Kleef had had the song 'Office Hell', about his boring office job, lying around for years before there was finally an almost-perfect version. In the sweltering hold of the Rotterdam lightship V11, the band played, in addition to 'Office Hell', the equally relaxed and restless 'Heal'.
