Een Front & Le Guess Who?-livesessie: a fungus

a fungus

The deserted corridors of the former Pieter Baan Center in Utrecht have something ghostly, something mysterious. The place where Volkert van der Graaf and Frans Meijer were imprisoned, among others, is now a sanctuary for artists. Not an unsuitable place for a band like a fungus. In collaboration with Le Guess Who?, Front recorded a session with the Amsterdam noise rock band.

a fungus is a band in its very early stages, but with a sound that exudes quite a bit of virtuosity and musical ambition. The quartet shares the melody of the many other young guitar bands that are now making progress in the capital, but draws its inspiration mainly from dynamic, unpredictable and rhythmically complex bands such as Slint, black midi and Black Country, New Road. Anyone who unsuspectingly attends a performance of a fungus will be shocked every time a ruthless guitar wall suddenly appears from a shuddering silence. The band plays the double single Trace/Health.

The session of a fungus is part of Vunk On Vacation, an alternative travel program of the Le Guess Who? festival. Where in a normal year the festival visitor can be surprised by exciting acts in the most interesting places throughout Utrecht, the Rotterdam legend DJ David Vunk takes on that task this year. In the first episode, seen below, he visits record store Dig It! and Arabic language cafe De Voorkamer.
